Ok, we have a new plan. I am going to hold off on trying to find a job, and I will focus on the search for a boat and all the work that will go along with that boat.
We have changed what we are looking for a bit though. We are going to try to find a small-ish monoholl that we can learn on and pay cash for (or maybe a very small loan, but not the original loan size we were looking at for a catamaran).
So, we called our broker and explained to him what we were looking for, and I started searching all of the boat selling sites. We looked at so many boats. So many of them are left unattended for long periods of time, which means they aren't getting regular maintenance and will need quite a bit of work.
We eventually found one that looked promising - a Cal-46. It is REALLY old - 1974, 46' long, beautiful boat. It feels like an old wood cabin inside. It is a little bigger than we were looking for - it feels a little intimidating - but definitely gives us lots of room.
We put an offer on the boat for a price we thought we could pay cash for, but unfortunately the owner did not accept the offer and we aren't sure we can go any higher.
So, we kept looking, and kept finding things in very poor shape. About 2 weeks later, we discussed as a family again, and decided to come up to the counteroffer price on the cal, if he would still accept it. It was a boat that our broker was actually the selling agent for, so he talked with him and our offer was accepted! Now we need to schedule a survey and see what shakes out. If all goes well, closing is set for December 7th.
