Welcome to Team SPC! This is the story of how it all started, and where our adventure began. My name is Christy, and I live with my husband Michael, and our girlfriend Bean.
We were just three people living in a house in New Mexico, 2 miles away from a town of less than 1000 people. We had a chunk of land, a nice house, a couple cars, a motorcycle, and were living a decent life, but something was missing. Going to work everyday, relaxing at night, it just felt like a rut - we needed something more in our lives.
So, we dug deep, and remembered a dream we had in our late 20s, early 30s - to buy a sailboat and sail around the world. This was in March of 2022. We started exploring options for where to go to learn (the closest lake to us currently was over 2 hours away!), and we started selling things trying to downsize. By May of 2022, we were ready to put the house on the market - it went up just after Memorial Day, and was sold before the end of July! That is another story for another time, but that was quite a whirlwind in itself.
We had decided to go to Corpus Christi, TX and give it a try. So, we loaded up what little belongings we had left into a 20' uhaul (it was not full), and hit the road. We were officially homeless! Once we got to Corpus Christi, we dropped our stuff off at a storage place I reserved online, and we grabbed a hotel room at the 'Extended Stay America' (it was pet friendly and we had a dog and a sugar glider at the time), which Michael likes to call the 'Team America' hotel, for a week. That gave me 7 days to find more semi-permanent lodging so we could take classes and buy a boat!
I did manage to find an apartment that would let us lease for 7 months 2 days before our week was out. We quickly signed the lease and got ourselves moved in with the basics. We did realize we may have gone a liiiitttle too far on the selling items, as we had sold our computer desks and we were still going to need to work from the apartment for a few months, oops! We quickly ran to Walmart and got two cheap desks, and two cheap chairs to make due until we have a boat to work from.
